Abbot of Shaolin

Starring: David Chiang

Cool movie with David Chiang as a shaolin abbot. Things get hectic with priest Pai Mei and his lama friend in this one.


Avenging Eagle

Starring: Alexander Fu Sheng, Ti Lung

This is one of those flicks that reminds you why you love kungf fu movies so much in the first place. The costumes, weapons, and plot are classic Shaw Brothers "master class" material. If you like exotic weapons, action packed tragic circumstances and long, exciting end-fights, then pick it up.

Avenging Warrior

Starring: Gordon Lui

The Master Killer stars as a monk wandering through a WWI disrupted China. Nice choreography, some silliness, but a definite must for GL fans.

Bastard Swordsman

1/2 Starring: Tsui Tsui Keung

TTK as a servant who becomes a master swordsman. Cool special effects (for the 80s) in the great finale. Excellent swordsmanship throughout this film!

 

Bells of Death

Starring: Chiang Yi

A man seeks the killers of his family in this old school "swordman's revenge" film. This one has the feel and pacing of a samurai movie with decent fight sequences. Fast choreography lovers may want to sit this one out.

Challenge of the Masters

Starring: Gordon Lui (The Master Killer)

Excellent film! Two rival kung fu schools engage in "vying for firecrackers" competitions which lead to treachery. Gordon plays the son of the master of one of the rival schools who must learn kung fu to bring his uncle's killer to justice.
It has a great story, great fight scenes, and a righteous message.

 

Chinese Super Ninjas

Starring: The Venoms

This flick is hot.This flick is tight. This flick is phat. This flick is excellent. This flick is one of the best ever made as far as I'm concerned. Chinese kung fu masters take on the Five Elements ninja after a martial arts contest leads to the suicide of a samurai connected with the ninja's leader.


D

Dance of the Drunken Mantis

Starring: Hwang Jang Lee, Sam Seed

Hwang Jang Lee plays the seemingly invincible "Rubberlegs" in the classic. It has cool training scenes, good acting, and an interesting plot supported by excellent kung fu action.


Demons,The

Starring: Some of the Venoms

Strange
movie about the main character, Joey(?) being turned into a demon in order to seek revenge. There's lots of "budget" special effects for most of the movie, and "The Demon Joey," as he is now called, has a pack of demon children which he 'sics' on his foes at times to drink their blood. Despite the suuuper strange occurences in this film, it earns its rating with skilled hand to hand fight sequences sprinkled throughout, and the cool end-fight.


Destroyers

Starring: Venoms Crew

Standard SB Venoms production with great fights, antics, and "intrigue." A must for Venoms fans.

Dirty Ho

1/2 Starring: Gordon Lui, Wong Yue, Lo Lieh

Interesting film that takes awhile to get to the "real" action. GL plays a prince who is undercover and gets tangled up with struggling thief/conman Wong Yue (ha ha.) Great finale!

Disciples of Death

1/2 Starring: Alexander Fu Sheng, Chi Kwan Chun

Shaolin Temple is the training groud for young AFS in this miniature epic. Decent fighting in this one (Early 70s speed/intricacy though).

Eight Diagram Pole Fighter,The

Starring: Alexander Fu Sheng, Gordon Lui, Philip Kao

Another gem from the SBs. Great epic about warring factions and the demise of a royal family. There are powerful kung fu scenes throughout, with Gordon Lui as the main character on the run from the armies seeking to decimate his family. Along the way he ends up at the Shaolin temple where Philip Kao teaches him the 8 diagram pole. If you know SB movies like I do, that can only mean one thing for his pursuers....

 

Executioners From Shaolin

Starring: Chen Kwan Tai, Lo Lieh

As far as I'm concerned, the White Lotus is, and always will be Lo Lieh's greatest character. Chen Kwan Tai stars as a great master of the tiger claws who seeks to kill the White Lotus before he destroys the resistance movement in China. Excellent fight scenes, great costumes, cool training sequences, and the White Lotus all add up to the classic this movie is.

Fist of the White Lotus

Starring: Lo Lieh, Gordon Lui

The White Lotus is no joke. Gordon Lui is no joke. This movie has Gordon Lui versus The White Lotus in a series of fights that are no joke. This movie has a dope technique in it call the 100 step palm, interesting training sequences, some of THE BEST fight scenes throughout, and one of THE BEST end-fights I think someone can ever see.
If you haven't seen it and you call yourself a collector, shame on you.

Five Deadly Venoms

Starring: The Venoms

I'd like to think everybody currently in their early 20s' has a fond childhood memory of this movie from weekend kung fu theatre. It has the classic intrigue, mystery, plot, and most of all, some of the most ridiculously cool kung fu techniques put to film. My only complaint about this film is that it isn't at least another hour longer.


Five Shaolin Masters/ Five Masters of Death

1/2 Starring: Alexander Fu Sheng, Chi Kwan Chun

Five refugees from shaolin learn five different styles of kung fu in order to take on the Manchus.


Flying Guillotine

1/2 Starring: Chen Kwan Tai

This is a good movie and what not, but would have been a "4" if it had a lot more hand to hand fighting sequences. Overall, it's well made and the story is interesting. I have to say the movie as a whole does deserve its classic status as an early kung fu flick.

Four Assassins

1/2 Starring: Alexander Fu Sheng

Alexander stars as one of four chinese rebel fugitives on the run from the mongol forces. The four learn cool styles and whoop some booty. Great training scenes, powerful kung fu, and exceptional choreography are the name of the game here folks.

Iron Chain Fighter

Starring: Ti Lung

Good, solid film. It has an interesting and mysterious plot, great acting, and cool "rough" fight scenes. "The man" Ti Lung stars as a rugged character seeking revenge for his wrongful imprisonment. The fight scenes seem a little less polished for a SB film at first, but fit the whole underground thugged-out criminal situations of the movie. I said the fight scenes are "rough" because there's no mistake that these people are trying to kill each other, and nothing less! As I remember it, there is only one scene in the movie which takes place in the daytime. The rest of the film seems to be at dusk or later into the night. This all works to great effect, and does nothing short of adding to the overall cool impact of the film and its numerous criminal types.

Iron Fingers of Death

Starring: Ti Lung

In this fantastic fantasy film, Ti lung stars as an orphaned prince who was separated from his royal origins during an overthrow. He is raised by three outcast old monks who are experts at seemingly all types of shaolin kung fu. There are flaming swords in this one, excellent fight choreography, and the unforgettable literal iron fingers of the head bad guy. If you see it, grab it.

Cream of the crop here, ladies and gentlemen. As James would say, "I don't have no doubt!" The Kid with the Golden Arm was one of the coolest characters ever in a kung fu movie. I mean c'mon, he SHATTERS a broad sword with his bare hands! If you don't have this film, you better get it and educate yourself on how to enjoy a masterpiece. CLASSIC!!!

This is the one that apparently started the american underground kung fu movie craze. I liked it. I think it's a cool movie. The violence and special effects definitely adds that 3/4 of funkhead to my rating. Without them, it would still be a good film with decent choreography for that matter, but I think its classic status would be a lot less valid. Overall its an enjoyable classic film which is surely worthy of study by the serious collector and casual fan of kung fu movies.
